Since I have (very) recently relocated to the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles, I'm blogging about all of my adventures here... the cool, "new" places I find and experience. Hopefully my Venice Beach blog will help other newcomers and tourists to explore the awesome Venice Beach area.
And, if I'm going to have a blog about Venice Beach, California then I had better start by writing about the Venice Beach Boardwalk. If you haven't been here then you may have images in your mind of an old wooden boardwalk with fish & chips shops, sleepy fishermen, and the occasional local vendor selling jewelery or small art pieces.
Actually, the Venice Boardwalk isn't an old, sleepy, wooden pier boardwalk at all. The boardwalk
does line an area of the Pacific Ocean but it is a bustling area consisting of a large paved walkway with shops & restaurants as well as street vendors. A grassy area divides this from a bike path and then there's the gorgeous sandy beach.
The 'heart' of Venice and the boardwalk is along the beach (just after you cross Speedway, which parallels the beach) between Rose Ave. and North Venice Boulevard. You'll find expensive parking in this area or you can park further back (east) in the neighborhoods and walk up to the boardwalk. On sunny days (which are most days in LA), there is non-stop action and never a dull moment.
You'll find anything/everything you want to eat or drink and the street vendors are musicians, magicians, jugglers, artists, importers, jewelery makers, craftspeople, tarot readers, temporary tattoos, clothing, and more. Shops include t-shirts, real tattoos, beach stuff, clothing, sunglasses, pipes, housewares, etc.
Many people think of body builders when they hear the words 'Venice Beach, California'... and, yes, there is an outdoor body building gym right on the beach, next to the boardwalk. More about this in a future blog.
The Venice Beach Boardwalk isn't just for boarders, bohemians, and body builders anymore... yes, they are still here but you'll find people from all walks of life enjoying everything the boardwalk has to offer.
In future blogs, I'll talk about specific gems on the boardwalk but this provides a good, broad overview. On the boardwalk do these things:
- Take a walk and browse the street vendors: buy some local art, get a temporary tattoo
- Take in one of the street vendor shows
- Bring your swimsuit and towel to sunbathe and go swimming
- Bring your skateboard for the skateboard park
- Rent a bike (or bring your own) and bike down to the Washington Pier (south) or up to Santa Monica (north)
- Have lunch and remember to get some ice cream or an iced coffee
If you're going to LA and if you're going to the beach, you have to experience the Venice Boardwalk. Here is a link to a good map I found: http://www.venicebeach.com/n_images/vbmap.html
Have fun!
